California psychologists sue for full hospital privileges
 
    California psychologists employed at state-run hospitals are hoping a lawsuit will obtain for them what a landmark court case, several acts of the state legislature and three study commissions have failed to achieve: the authority to direct patient care.
    If successful, California could become the 18th state where psychologists enjoy full hospital privileges.

HMO's win Supreme Court challenge
 
     The 10 states that have enacted legislation to allow patients to sue their health maintenance organizations for damages in state courts overstepped their authority, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in late June.
 
     The ruling is a significant victory for the healthcare industry, granting broad protections to HMOs from medical malpractice suits brought by patients.

Managed Care Congress recognizes importance of mental health
 
    WASHINGTON — Treatment for mental illnesses is gaining support in a camp historically notorious for slamming the checkbook closed on psychotherapy — administrators of managed health care plans.
     The growing movement to give mental health providers a larger role in overall wellness was apparent at the May 5-7 National Managed Health Care Congress in Washington, D.C., which, for the first time, included a behavioral health track.

Louisiana Medical Psychologists Gain Prescriptive Authority

 After 10 days of consideration, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco on May 6 signed House Bill 1426 into law, granting Louisiana medical psychologists the authority to prescribe psychotropic medications.
