Victory near on California hospital privileges
By Richard E. Gill Assistant Editor
A surprising decision by the California Department of Health Services (DHS)
to investigate a complaint that a Los Angeles hospital is violating state law by not granting psychologists full attending authority,
plus a lawsuit that effectively ended in their favor have psychologists on the cusp of receiving full hospital privileges denied them for nearly 30 years.
"We were not a high priority for DHS," said Bill Safarjan, Ph.D., past president of the California Psychological Association (CPA)
and current member of the APA Committee for the Advancement of Professional Practice.
Glasser headlines psychotherapy conference
By James Bradshaw
Senior Editor
ORLANDO
- Renowned psychiatrist William Glasser, M.D.,
was the top drawing card at the multi-disciplinary 2006 national conference of the American Psychotherapy Association
and the American Association of Integrative Medicine held here in September.
In a day-long series of sessions, Glasser hammered home his message that drugs should be used only for
medically diagnosed brain disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, and that therapists should concentrate on mental health rather than
mental illness.
Psychology archives gets new home
By Richard E. Gill Assistant Editor
AKRON, Ohio - It’s an ugly duckling now, but David B. Baker, Ph.D.,
hopes one day soon to turn the old brick building into a beautiful swan to house artifacts and records
dating back as much as five centuries in the valued Archives of the History of American Psychology.
Donated by Roadway Express, the four-story, 60,000-square-foot building will
take about $10 million dollars to renovate. Baker, director of the archives presently located in the Polsky
Building on the campus of the University of Akron, said constructing a similar facility would cost in excess
of $35 million dollars.
